Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
Pakistan's inquiry committee report Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed from teams Osman Samiuddin March 10, 2010 The PCB has sacked ex-captains Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan from all formats of the international game © AFP The PCB has struck against its players with a venom unseen in recent memory, carrying out the deepest cull of a senior cricket team in many years, banning and fining seven of its top players after the side's disastrous, winless tour of Australia. The board effectively banned Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf from playing for Pakistan in any format, while handing out one-year bans to Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan. Shahid Afridi and the Akmal brothers were fined Rs2-3 million for various misdemeanours and put on six-month probations. Action had been expected once details of the inquiry committee's report recommendations were leaked in the press on Monday and Ijaz Butt, chairman PCB, had followed it up by saying "more than significant action" would be taken against players. While the punishments for Malik, Rana, Afridi and the Akmal brothers were expected, the action against Yousuf and Younis has caught most people off-guard. "Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan, keeping in view their infighting which resulted in bringing down the whole team, their attitude has a trickledown effect which is a bad influence for the whole team, should not be part of national team in any format," said a board statement. The PCB has stopped short of calling the punishment a life ban. "They will not be part of any Pakistan team in any format from here on," Taffazul Rizvi, the board's legal advisor told Cricinfo. "A life ban means they cannot play domestic cricket or any other similar cricket, but we are not stopping them from that. They can play domestic cricket or county cricket here and abroad." Kamran and Umar Akmal were fined Rs 3 and 2 million respectively [$35,000 and $24,000] presumably for their part in the run-up to the final Test in Hobart, when Kamran repeatedly and publicly insisted he would be picked despite a PCB release stating the opposite, and Umar allegedly feigned an injury and threatened to not play. Afridi was fined Rs 3 million and put on six months' probation for his ball-biting incident while captaining the side in the last ODI in Perth, for which he has already been punished by the ICC. The PCB release called it a "shameful act" that "has brought the game and country into disrepute". The six-man committee completed its report last week and sent it to Ijaz Butt. The chairman held a meeting with the selection committee on Monday in which he briefed them on the contents of the inquiry committee's report. He warned the selectors - now headed by Mohsin Khan - that he had "shocking news" for them and proceeded to inform them of the details of the report. More news to follow... Re: Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
wow thats shocking news lol i cant believe Yousuf and Younis have been axed
this really is going to be a rebuilding project, replacing YK and Yousuf in the test squad is going to be very hard Waqar certainly has a difficult job on his hands now Malik will be missed for his batting in T20 and ODI's too but i think in the shorter forms we can somewhat cover his loss its the test matches without our 2 senior players im worried about
end of the day though, i think the PCB had no choice but to do something like this - i think for once Ijaz Butt has come close to doing the right thing, as long he doesnt go back on his word which he so often has lol

Surely Afridi for captain for all three formats after his slap on the wrists?
Well...let's see where we go from here
In essence, a decent decision.

Re: Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
agree with DS thats something i dont agree with - banning YK and Yousuf was silly the board are pathetic themselves and are probably just trying to save their own skins by throwing out such harsh treatments besides what did YK do? he was captain and his players turned against him and the board didnt back him then when that was really the time to lay the smackdown on any player groupings, instead they've dumped YK and kicked him when he was down, YK really has been on the short end of the stick in each scenario

Re: Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
This is the updated report from cricinfo - Quote: The PCB has struck against its players with a venom unseen in recent memory, carrying out the deepest cull of a senior cricket team in many years and banning and fining seven of its top players after the side's disastrous, winless tour of Australia. It has banned Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, from playing for Pakistan in any format for an indefinite period, while handing out one-year bans to Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan. Shahid Afridi and the Akmal brothers were fined Rs2-3 million [$24,000-35,000] for various misdemeanours and put on six-month probations.
Action had been expected once details of the inquiry committee's report recommendations were leaked in the press on Monday and Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, had followed it up by saying "more than significant action" would be taken against players. While the punishments for Malik, Rana, Afridi and the Akmal brothers were expected, the action against Yousuf and Younis has caught most people off-guard.
"Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan, keeping in view their infighting which resulted in bringing down the whole team, their attitude has a trickledown effect which is a bad influence for the whole team should not be part of national team in any format," the board said in its statement issued on Wednesday.
They can play domestic cricket or county cricket here and abroad."
Typically there was confusion and the board later appeared to climb down by clarifying that this was not the end of their careers. In a statement released at least six hours after the original release, the board said, "that the recommendation of the Committee is not a life ban on these cricketers. There is no specified term in the recommendation for these two players. As and when the PCB deems appropriate, these players will be considered for selection for the national team."
Rizvi refused to elaborate on the nature of the pair's cases, but it is believed that the board had generally had enough with the two. Younis twice stepped down from the captaincy last year with player unrest against his leadership the underlying cause both times. Yousuf's sins are equally unclear, other than that he led a winless tour to Australia and engaged thereafter in a public battle with Malik.
The cases of indiscipline that have led to one-year bans on Malik and Rana, similarly, have not been expanded upon. "Rana Naved ul Hasan and Shoaib Malik be fined Rupees Two million. They should not be part of national team in any format for a period of one year."
Malik's name has figured persistently at the centre of speculation over the last year in inciting player unrest within the team, though nothing substantial has appeared in public to back that up. "We cannot discuss the specifics of the incident as we are under oath," Rizvi said. "But obviously we have taken action after much consideration and based on solid information."
In contrast, the cases of Akmal brothers and Shahid Afridi are straightforward. The brothers were fined for their behavior in the aftermath of the Sydney Test; Kamran was dropped by the board but insisted publicly he would be selected in the run-up to the third Test. Younger brother Umar was alleged to have feigned an injury to not play the Test in protest, though he did eventually play. Kamran has been fined Rs 3 million, Umar Rs 2 million and the pair are on probation.
Afridi was punished for the ball-biting incident in the Perth ODI, where he was captain. He has already been punished by the ICC, who immediately gave him a two-match ban. "For the shameful act of Shahid Khan Afridi, which has brought the game and country into disrepute, he be fined Rupees 3 million," the board said. "A warning be issued to him by the Chairman PCB and he be put on probation for 06 months, during which his conduct be strictly monitored."
The bans were handed down by an inquiry committee which comprised former players Wasim Bari, Zakir Khan and Yawar Saeed, besides Wazir Ali Khoja, a member of the PCB governing council, and Rizvi. The committee held hearings on February 12th, 13th and the 27th, and looked into reports from former coach Intikhab Alam, manager Abdul Raqeeb and newly appointed coach Waqar Younis, who was the bowling consultant during the Australia tour. Besides the players who were punished, the committee questioned Intikhab, Raqeeb, opener Salman Butt, assistant coach Aaqib Javed, the physio Faisal Hayat and the PCB's cricket analyst Mohammad Talha.
Attention will turn now to how the players will respond. Legal action or appeals will be a consideration though Rizvi insisted the board was on solid ground. "We are on good ground with this," he said. "The PCB has done it thinking it is the right thing to do. It sets an example for the future."
As a whole, the action is almost unparalleled in even Pakistan's troubled history. The 2000 Justice Qayyum report had similar repercussions but that was about the graver concerns of corruption. This cull has been carried out, ostensibly, in a bid to curb indiscipline and player power.

Re: Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
the only reason why Malik got a year ban and MYK / Yousuf life time ones *if they arent retracted due to PCB having no backbone* is because he's younger and thats not really a fair punishment then! They obviously intend to have him back in the side soon...but hope they can replace him lol

Re: Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
we've been hearing a lot abt Malik's alleged insbordination and if it's true he does deserve a ban...but I personally believe in "innocent till proven guilty" and I could be wrong but Malik doesn't seem guilty of antyhing other than his spats with Yousuf and a shifty look, lol
but Yousuf and Younus' bans are shameful, absolutely disgraceful for 2 of Pakistan's best stalwarts and I don't know what they did wrong, apart from Yousuf's occasional tactlessness as skip and a poor winning record
Afridi--punished already, the PCB is a far greater disgrace than his ballchomping
Kamran Akmal--thought the punishment was tough but essentially fair
Umar Akmal--think the punishment's rubbish because it's based on hearsay
Rana Naved--I can imagine him being a bit indisciplined but he's a 100 percent trier & a year long ban is massively harsh...

Re: Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
^^^ with regards to Malik and Rana id have to say im inclined to agree they are justified - the PCB called up a number of people to give their side of the story including the players, coaches(Inti and Waqar) and other people who were involved with the team (physio and manager) if after taking into account all of these reports they have come to the conclusion Malik and Rana should be banned then something has obviously come up from more than one of the above mentioned sources which implicates Malik and Rana in this whole saga

Re: Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
you make a decent point, but the double-Y-whammy really really ticks me off. Rashid Latif was right, the board is just using cheap distraction to try and look like they're doing something. I'm not too fussed about the Malik-Rana bit tbh although I wish people would specify their exact crime, but surely it's time for Butt to go

Re: Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
^as long as we have mr. 10% nobody can harm butt dada... True and just as what the PCB as a last resort for their inexpicable and horendous misleading management.....the palyers are the ones paying the price... really interested to see how this follows on especially while we have so much time till the next innings for Pakistan Team starts...more than 50 days... while other teams are busy polishing their armour and preparing their arsenal for the upcoming WC T20I.... Pakistan is yet again winging & whining on their peanut butter jam sandwiches....probably just what the biggest opposition we have (India) wants so they might have a flithering chance to atleast reach last 8....
its true.....Donkeys do not have horns .......

Re: Rana, Malik get one-year bans, Younis and Yousuf axed
Decision to punish Pak players came from the topKarachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board's stringent disciplinary action against erring players, including indefinite bans on former captains Mohammad Yousuf and Younus Khan, was backed by the country's President and PCB chief patron Asif Ali Zardari. Well placed sources told PTI that the PCB had kept Zardari and the sports ministry aware of the recommendations made by the inquiry committee which probed the team's poor performance in Australia. "The board moved against the seven players after getting approval from the top," one source said. The PCB said it had placed an indefinite ban on Yousuf and Younus as their infighting had a bad influence on the team. The Board also announced a 12-month ban on Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved and fines of Rs three million each on Shahid Afridi and Kamran Akmal and Rs two million on Umar Akmal. The board had also placed Shahid and Kamran under a six-month probation. One source said during the hearing of the inquiry committee and after speaking to the coach, manager, captain and other players and even the support staff, it became clear that some players had their own law in the team. http://cricketnext.in.com/news/decision ... 80-13.html
